Common electrical questions askedI know how to do electrical work;
Can I do installations myself without attending electrical training courses?
It’s unlikely that you’ll know enough to be a competent person without any formal electrical training. Plus it is now a criminal offence punishable by a fine of up to £5,000 if a non-competent person carries out domestic installation work that doesn’t comply with Part P of the Building Regulations.
What is Part P?
In January 2005 domestic electrical installation work became subject to Part P of the Building Regulations, enforced by local authority building control departments. This was designed to improve standards in the industry and it applies not just to professional work but also to DIY projects.
I need to do electrical installations, what are my options to comply with Part P regulations?
1) Self certification – registering as a competent person with a regulatory body such as the NICEIC, NAPIT or ELECSA.
2) Notification – Notifying the relevant local authority building control department in advance of work to be undertaken so they can inspect the work, which must comply with the 17th Edition Wiring Regulations and Part P.
