How can you get started in the electrical industry?

There are two routes available if you’re looking to begin working in the electrical industry:

1. Complete an electrical apprenticeship to become a fully qualified electrician

2. Train as a domestic electrical installer then progress to become an electrician

Electrical apprenticeships

To become a fully qualified electrician, you’ll need to gain the City & Guilds 2357 NVQ Diploma. This qualification consists of electrical theory training and exams held at our electrical training centre in Gloucester and on-site electrical experience gained from employment. It is only possible to complete the 2357 if you are employed in the electrical industry and gaining hands-on experience.

The electrical contracting arm of Clarkson Evans recruits electrical apprentices every year. Based at either the head office in Gloucester or at one of eight regional branches, apprentices normally attend our training centre in Gloucester one day a week.

We can also provide electrical training for apprentices employed by other electrical contractors.

Become a domestic electrical installer

This course is designed for mature career changers looking to enter the electrical industry. In just four weeks you can achieve four electrical City & Guilds qualifications and gain the knowledge and skills required to be an electrical domestic installer. Once complete, register with a self-certification scheme to sign off electrical work in domestic settings.

You’ll then need to gain experience in the electrical industry and look to further your qualifications.

Further training for electricians

Short electrical training courses

We also offer a range of short courses for electricians or domestic electrical installers to further your career (see the list above). And there are electrical awareness courses for non-electricians who need to learn about electrical safety.

Solar PV courses

Our 3-day Logic Certification Solar PV Installer course is designed for electricians who want to learn how to install PV systems. We also offer a one-day Solar PV Surveyor course for non-electricians involved in selling PV systems.

Our electrical training courses take place at our purpose-built training centre in Gloucester, although if you require electrical training at your premises it can be arranged.

Why choose electrical training at our centre?

  1. Our purpose built electrical centre in Gloucester features a wide range of resources, including seven practical workshop areas, five classrooms, an IT suite and our unique ‘mock house’ testing and fault finding facility. All classrooms are air conditioned and equipped with high quality learning technology.
  2. Our lecturers and assessors all have many years of electrical experience, across a variety of fields. The team’s experience ranges from operating as small self-employed electrical contractors to working for multi-national companies, covering electrical domestic installation to high voltage distribution and nearly everything in between.
  3. We have direct links to the latest industry developments through Clarkson Evans, the electrical contracting side of our business.
  4. Lunch and refreshments are included with all training courses. Delegates can relax in our ‘Buzz Bar’ canteen and choose from a range of sandwiches and snacks as well as a selection of hot bakery items like pasties and sausage rolls.
  5. There’s free parking on site and we’re within easy reach of the M5 motorway.
  6. Read what people say about our electrical training courses, their comments speak for themselves
